After Adam’s visit and the embarrassing hug incident, Holly wanted to either crawl under a rock or read. She decided to go with the latter. She walked down the hall, heading toward the book’s current home, the nightstand beside her bed. As she did, it seemed like the left wall flashed with neon lights. She’d forgotten about the family photos lining it.

He knew about her girls. Why hadn’t he asked about them? Something like, “Hey, it’s obvious you have kids.” As she studied them, she realized that Abbie and Ivy were in most of them, but they weren’t just with her. They were with her parents, her sisters—one even had them with their great-uncle, her dad’s brother who’d visited them a couple of years ago.

Maybe he didn’t know they were hers. Keeping her kids out of her romantic life was the only answer she saw. When Matt had found out on his own, he’d pulled back emotionally and eventually ended the relationship. But, more important than her feelings, she knew the only way to protect her girls emotionally was to make sure her dating life did not intersect her family life. Too bad that romantic life was now non-existent.

Matt was a nice guy, but one of his main selling points had been that she’d thought he’d be a good dad for her girls. She needed a great husband and a great father for them. A breath of fresh air swept through her. She wouldn’t choose a man just for her girls. She had to love him, at least a little.

Then she’d tell this future mystery man about the girls.

Continuing to her bedroom, she thought of the warmth of Adam’s arms wrapped around her, and she wondered if not having a man in her life was completely true. This man didn’t scream husband or father material. But having his arms around her had made her heart flutter more than a little.

Book in hand, she returned to the living area, ready to sink into a story for an hour. Spotting her computer, she knew work had to come first. She set the book down and patted it fondly. “I’ll be back to you soon.” The luxury of reading in the middle of the day would be waiting for her.

She set up viewings for the ten houses she’d show Adam on Thursday. Surely one of those would be his dream house.
